Lecture-nap "... and it will be a place where refuge is no longer necessary and you will find that you were in it all along... " , 2021

The philosopher Emma Bigé, accompanied on stage by the performers Antonija Livingstone and Hélio Volana, gives a lecture-sieste in which she talks about the edges, those border places where entanglements, splits and hybridisations arise.

Lulled by the chiselled words of the speech, seated or lying down, awake or drowsy, follow the three performers in philosophical and poetic walks, which sharpen the eye, the ear, and the whole body.

"To dance, to fall, to touch, to sleep, to listen, to move, to be born, to die, to swim. All these verbs have this in common: in Greek and Sanskrit, they are neither in the active nor in the passive, but in another mode: the medial. The medial way says something like: every touching is a being-touched, every birth is something I do and that happens to me, every swimming is both a breaststroke and a letting oneself be carried by the water."

Dance is one of those medial gestures, through which I never quite know about whom it is being said.

Emma Bigé studies, writes and translates in the fields of dance, queer studies and environmental inhumanities.

A doctor of philosophy, dancer, and exhibition creator, she is the author of Mouvementements. Écopolitique de la danse, published by La Découverte (2023). She is a member of the editorial team of the journal Multitudes, and irregularly teaches epistemology at art schools and choreographic centres. She lives near a forest in the Périgord region of France, and whenever she can, she rolls around on the ground.
