Tiago Rodrigues, By Heart, 2013

In By Heart, Tiago Rodrigues tells us a story: that of his grandmother who, having become blind, asks her grandson to choose a book that she could learn by heart.
But what exactly does it mean to 'learn a text by heart'? And how can we, together with the audience, get closer to this question, to its urgency, to its charge?

By inviting ten spectators each evening to perform this gesture, Tiago Rodrigues is not content to blur the boundaries between theatre, fiction and reality.

He invites men and women to experience, to share, for the duration of the performance, a singular experience: that of retaining a text and saying it.
An act of artistic and political resistance, as well as a fight against time, oblivion, ageing, absence and disappearance.

A gesture as intimate as it is political.

Portuguese actor and director Tiago Rodrigues' first ambition was to perform with people who wanted to invent shows together.

His encounter with tg STAN in 1997, when he was 20 years old, definitively marked his attachment to the absence of hierarchy within a group in creation. The freedom of play and decision given to the actor will forever influence the course of his shows.

At the same time, he wrote scripts, press articles, poems, prefaces and articles.

In 2003, he founded the company Mundo Perfeito with Magda Bizarro, in which he created numerous shows without settling in a fixed location, becoming a guest of national and international institutions.

In France, he presented his Portuguese version of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra at the Avignon Festival in 2015, which was published, like all his plays translated into French, by Les Solitaires intempestifs.

By heart was presented in 2014 at the Théâtre de la Bastille, which subsequently invited him to lead a two-month "occupation" of the theatre in spring 2016, during which he created Bovary.

Tiago Rodrigues is the director of the Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II in Lisbon.
