Watchtower I is a hybrid sculpture consisting of the trunk of a cypress tree topped with four warning sirens and mounted on an orange-painted steel base. Created as part of the Horny, Aimless & Alone project, the work combines a natural element, the cypress trunk, with surveillance architecture. Through this fusion between the organic and the artificial, Serfaty highlights the exploitation of natural resources in the service of control mechanisms as embodied by the watchtower—a historical symbol of strength and power. The addition of warning sirens at the top of the trunk introduces a critical dimension, as it is no longer just a matter of signalling domination: the work raises awareness of the urgent need to imagine other modes of existence within complex systems that are not based on subjugation, but on desire and collective intertwining.
