Ultimate Vatos: Force & Honneur (Vol.1)

Artist: Sara Sadik
Date: 2022
Medium: Vidéo
Collection: Lafayette anticipations - Fonds de dotation Famille Moulin
Domain: Vidéo

The hero of this video is sitting a recruitment exam for a special military force. The work draws both on documentary and video game aesthetics, in particular the camera movements that bring together the protagonist and the viewer in an empathetic movement. Produced in three parts, Force & Honneur is typical of Sara Sadik's stories of initiation, in which she portrays young men from immigrant backgrounds. The neologism beurcore (the term beur refers to French people of North African descent) coined by the artist encapsulates the influences of her daily life and popular culture such as science fiction, fashion, and rap. Here we find one of her favourite subjects, the conditioning of masculinity linked to physical and psychological strength, a vision that Sara Sadik aims to deconstruct. With this piece, whose title can be seen as referring to the film Gladiator as well as to French rap, she also criticises the propaganda often associated with the military world.
