Karla Black studied sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art, receiving her Master of Fine Arts in 2004. Her work – found at the limits of painting, sculpture and installation – examines the subtleties of gravity, light, immateriality and various colours. Evanescent, Black’s pieces are usually constructed in situ and thus challenge lines and shapes, sprawling on the ground or falling from the roof.

Karla Black has had solo exhibitions at many international institutions, including the Kestnergesellschaft in Hannover (2014), the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia (2013), the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague (2013), the Dallas Museum of Art (2012), the Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin (2012), the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow (2012), the Kunsthalle Nürnberg (2010), the Modern Art Oxford (2009), the Kunstverein Hamburg (2009) and the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich (2009). Her works are included in prestigious international collections such as that of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich and the Tate Gallery in London. Karla Black was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2011 and represented her native country in both the 2011 and 2017 Venice Biennale.
