Matthew Angelo Harrison is an African-American artist whose sculpture stands at the intersection of anthropology, science fiction and industrial design. His series Dark Silhouette consists of African artefacts set in transparent resin blocks, into which he carves reliefs and geometric perforations. Taken out of their native context and inserted into a foreign setting, these artefacts are a reminder that Western museums abound with objects removed from their places of origin by colonial violence. The very material of this figure, wood from another continent, suggests an uprooting, whether long ago or recent, and the push and pull between the lands from which we come – which are often unknown, like the exact provenance of this object – and those we end up calling home.

Matthew Angelo Harrison at the Fondation
Matthew Angelo Harrison crée des sculptures qui font dialoguer l’anthropologie et le design industriel. Son travail consiste à combiner des œuvres originales en bois issues des cultures africaine et afro-américaine avec des répliques en résine acrylique qu’il moule à l’aide d’une imprimante 3D. À travers des réalisations teintées par l’histoire du colonialisme, l’artiste cherche à bouleverser la hiérarchie habituelle des objets ainsi qu’à mettre en évidence les aspects problématiques de l’acquisition et de l’exposition de l’art africain dans les musées occidentaux.

Né en 1989 à Detroit dans le Michigan (États-Unis), Matthew Angelo Harrison est diplômé de la School of Art Institute of Chicago (2012). Il vit et travaille actuellement à Detroit.
