The text Tutuguri ou le rite du soleil noir is presented framed under a sheet of tinted Plexiglas. Composed by Antonin Artaud to be recited on the radio, it was inspired by his trip to Mexico in 1936. The work, which recounts the peyote funeral ritual among the Tarahumara, is opened to a page evoking the night. The dark colour of the glass echoes the darkness of the text itself. This volume belongs to a series of framed books exhibited at the Catherine Bastide gallery in 2011. It accompanied the maquette Night house at daytime, a sculpture-habitat immersed in an endless night. The text’s Mexican ambiance echoes the photographs and the house’s Aztec-inspired roof, contributing to the creation of a Mesoamerican world. Like the photographs and the “Soleils” presented on this occasion, the text plays with light and darkness. The combination of these works complements the sculpture and evokes the world that the house perceives through its darkened windows.
