Following on from Phantom, a virtual world based on a 3D scan of vegetation, and from 16 MM, an intimate, sensorial exploration of the forest through a travelling shot, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané has produced a black-and-white view of the dense foliage of the Mata Atlântica, a virgin forest in south-western Brazil, which provides no escape for the eye. While Phantom explores the texture and immensity of the forest and 16 MM its sensuality, the photograph Spiral Forest 2 suspends this exploration in order to enable the discovery of the depth and luminosity of this ecosystem which is as hostile as it is fragile.

L’œuvre de Daniel Steegmann Mangrané se distingue par une grande ouverture sur toutes les techniques et toutes les échelles, du dessin au film en passant par la sculpture, l’installation ou l’intervention sur le paysage. L’observation des phénomènes naturels, la perception ainsi que l’approche des différentes conceptions de la vie marquent la pratique de l’artiste. Ses créations questionnent le rapport à l’environnement et invitent le spectateur à exercer une conscience qui l’engage physiquement, dans une projection ou un déplacement, induisant parfois une relation dynamique de transformation mutuelle avec l’œuvre.
