Warp is a participatory performance by Ad Hoc, commissioned by CHERUBY, the Shanghai-based institution operating at the intersection of art and fashion, and presented at Lafayette Anticipations.

Since 2024, Paris-based artist Marie Hazard and Lisbon-based fashion designer Constança Entrudo have collaborated on Ad Hoc, a textile project where artistic research meets the worn garment. The name comes from the Ad Hoc Committee of Women Artists, founded in 1970 in response to the underrepresentation of women artists at the Whitney Annual. In Latin, ad hoc means "for this": something devised for a specific situation rather than according to a predetermined plan. Ad Hoc is less a collection of objects than a sequence of events.

In weaving, the warp is the set of longitudinal threads stretched on a loom, the primary structure from which a textile is made. Hazard, who works with traditional looms, sees the warp as the beginning. Entrudo has developed a garment-making technique that rejects the weft entirely, so her pieces are composed solely of warp threads. For her, the warp is the end. Between these two positions, the artists developed the idea of the fold, a methodology through which two practices fold their differences into one another without collapsing them.

Warp was developed during Hazard and Entrudo's residency at CHERUBY in Shanghai, where they encountered a 1970s roll of samples made by a Chinese textile factory for its Japanese kimono clients. Weavers used such samples to demonstrate the full breadth of their craft, bringing a multitude of patterns together in a single continuous surface. That principle of accumulation, continuity and variation became the starting point for this performance.

Here, the warp is an immense roll of threads, the image of a textile without interruption. The weft is the audience. Caught in the weave, each garment, object and body becomes several things at once: worn and woven, spectator and material. Warp gives material form to the ad hoc: a textile that exists only through the temporary gathering of bodies, threads, and gestures.

Following the performance, join us for drinks co-hosted by CHERUBY and Studio2M, the New York space founded by Abby Caulkins, where Ad Hoc was first developed.

Marie Hazard is a French artist whose work bridges traditional craftsmanship and industrial textile processes.

Combining weaving, digital printing, photography, painting and literature, she explores the relationship between image, textile and memory. Her work has been exhibited at Espace de l'Art Concret (2026), Dallas Contemporary (2025), Galería Mascota, Mexico City (2022) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (2019), among others. She was awarded the THREAD Residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Senegal (2024), and in 2022 co-founded Potyra, an art centre in Serra Grande, Brazil. Her work is held in the collections of Museo Jumex, Mexico City, and Fondation Thalie, Belgium.

Constança Entrudo is a Portuguese textile designer known for a fluid, experimental approach to fashion.

After working with studios including Balmain and Peter Pilotto, she launched her namesake label in 2019. Through techniques spanning embroidery, weaving, digital printing and dyeing, she investigates the relationship between craft, technology and contemporary production, moving fluidly between fashion, textile design, art and interiors. She has presented collections at New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and ModaLisboa, and has collaborated with Camper and Timberland. Her work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museu do Design e da Moda, Lisbon.
