Published to mark Xinyi Cheng’s first solo exhibition in France, "Seen Through Others" is the first monograph devoted to the artist.
The book brings together essays by international art critics who explore her approach to portraiture, the body and emotions. Alongside reproductions of the artworks are five original photographs by the artist, inserted at random into each copy. Inspired by the idea of ‘lines of desire’, the publication reflects Cheng’s painting, characterised by detours and unexpected encounters. Texts by Christina Li, Kirsty Bell, Alvin Li and Mi You shed light on the symbolic, introspective and sensitive dimension of a body of work in which waiting, idleness and vulnerability become forms of resistance and attentiveness to the world.
