Untitled is a three-metre-high sculpture that reproduces, on a monumental scale, a generic, mass-produced children’s magic wand. First presented in the Berlin Straße exhibition in 2024, the work forms part of the artist’s exploration of Berlin’s urban and social fabric. Similar wands are notably used in Berlin’s rave culture, which has become emblematic of the city. Abandoned on the pavements after the party, they take on a more bitter significance by evoking the contrasts between ecstasy and depression that permeate the scene. The enlargement of everyday objects, a recurring theme in Williams’s work, here explores the relationship between the body and its environment. The baton, which can only be lifted collectively, thus becomes a metaphor for the potential for social transformation driven by collective strength.
