Presented as part of her first solo exhibition in London in 2024, these four sculptures by Miriam Stoney belong to a series of twelve pieces conceived as the material counterpoint to a hypothetical text which may or may not exist. They thus question the materiality of the text while eluding the all-encompassing category of writing. These are corner pieces whose dimensions correspond to the length between the artist’s elbow and the tip of her middle finger. Each is decorated differently using materials commonly used in the construction of houses. Two German terms illuminate the work. Eckdaten, the title of the exhibition, refers to “essential data” and, through the word Ecke (“angle” in German), alludes to the very form of the works, thus anchoring their physical dimension in language. Roter Faden—the red thread that Ariadne gives to Theseus—evokes the image of the labyrinth and the possibility of finding a way out.
