Intempéries takes the form of a bathtub covered with a mosaic of tile fragments collected from a beach in the Terre-Sainte district of Réunion. The installation probes and transcribes the cyclonic activity of the seven basins in real time, filling itself autonomously as a cyclone approaches and at the end of the meteor’s passage. A screen displays the name of the system, the wind force, and the forecast for the following 24 hours. The artist explains that the installation was inspired by the memory of her mother filling the bathtub with drinking water for fear of a shortage, a gesture that heralds the most intense cyclones. The image of calm water in a climate of emergency left a deep impression on her. Later, this memory was rekindled by Jesmyn Ward’s novel Wildwood, in which a young girl from the bayou prepares for Hurricane Katrina. Brossard recognised an experience she thought was a private one, which suddenly became shared with another child on the other side of the world.
