The video installation Coal powered T.V 1&2 consists of two screens, a fringed curtain, and the projection of the video Reflect as one. The work is inspired by a personal experience during a night flight on which the artist discovered The Women (2008) – a remake of George Cukor’s 1939 film – which rekindled childhood memories linked to passive television viewing. The main character in the video Reflect as one is her niece, perceived as her double. The familiar voices of the actresses in The Women have been cut up and recomposed to produce the effect of a film playing in the background. In a strategic ploy, Reaves repurposes a screen as a sculpture. The bulkiness of the monitor, like the other works in the space, deliberately aims to divert attention away from the video in order to explore the tension created by the viewer’s limited attention span – particularly in the context of the exhibition – and the contrast, dear to the artist, between the two types of media, contrasting the ephemeral nature of video with the materiality of sculpture.
