Grosse fatigue
Camille Henrot’s film Grosse fatigue, which received the Silver Lion at the 55th Venice Biennale, was made with the help of an artistic research grant from the Smithsonian Institution (Washington) in 2013. Inspired by the Smithsonian’s encyclopaedic concept and scientific collections, she embarked on an attempt to collect stories about the creation of the world in African, Western, Melanesian, and Asian cultures. Thus, Grosse fatigue functions as a long non-linear poem that articulates these different narratives and images, but also, according to the artist, as an “experience of density” built on the principle of a Google search. Henrot, who is interested in postcolonial issues, invites us to reflect on the authenticity of objects and their collection by Western societies. The recited text is an open reflection that guides the spectator through the continuous flow of images. Henrot sums up her approach in these terms: “What interests me is to bring knowledge to life as a physical experience, not as something to be acquired.”

La pratique protéiforme de Camille Henrot englobe autant la photographie et la vidéo que la sculpture et le dessin. L’artiste nous invite à renouveler notre regard sur les objets qui constituent notre environnement immédiat. Passionnée d’anthropologie, de littérature et de sciences humaines, elle s’intéresse, à travers une approche transculturelle, aux mythologies et aux croyances qui résident au cœur de l’expérience humaine.
Née en 1978 à Paris (France), Camille Henrot a été diplômée en cinéma d’animation à l’École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris en 2002. Nommée pour le prix Marcel Duchamp en 2010, elle a représenté la France et remporté le Lion d’argent à la 55e Biennale de Venise en 2013. Elle a également reçu le prix Nam June Paik en 2014 et l’Edvard Munch Art Award en 2015. Camille Henrot vit et travaille à New York depuis 2013.
