Yasuaki Shimizu

An exceptional evening featuring two artists whose works unfold unique soundscapes, at the crossroads of memory, dreams and experimentation: Dagmar Zuniga and Yasuaki Shimizu.

An emerging figure on the New York independent scene, Dagmar Zuniga composes intimate and enigmatic music, where vocal harmonies, analogue warmth and lo-fi textures blend in songs that seem to emerge from another era. Recorded on a four-track tape recorder over the course of several years, her debut album *in filth your mystery is kingdom / far smile peasant in yellow music* was an instant hit, driven by its ability to bring together fragility, mysticism and power.

The Japanese composer and saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu, a leading figure in experimental music since the 1970s, has for several decades been creating work of rare freedom. Spanning jazz, electronic music, minimalism and classical music, he has collaborated with artists as diverse as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Helen Merrill and Towa Tei, whilst developing a deeply personal style. His reinterpretations of Bach’s Cello Suites on the tenor saxophone, recorded in venues with strong acoustic resonance, reflect a particular focus on space and on listening as a physical experience. In this brand-new live performance, Yasuaki is accompanied by his sister, Mieko Shimizu.

Yasuaki Shimizu is a maverick saxophonist, composer and producer whose almost 50-year career spans an impossibly broad range of genres.

He is a well-known musical presence in Japan recognised for his crossover pop hits, film soundtrack work and a host of high-profile live commissions, installations and collaborations with the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Björk, Van Dyke Parks and David Cunningham. Shimizu' music reached a wider audience in the West following the reissue on Palto Flats of his iconic 1982 solo album Kakashi and his band Mariah’s classic 1983 record Utakata No Hibi – masterful hybrids of Japanese folk and pop idioms filtered via a honed electronic/disco production aesthetic that make them sound fresher than ever today. Shimizu embarked on his first North American tour in 2025, selling out every show. The electrifying performances generated immense excitement and critical acclaim, demonstrating his ever-evolving artistry.
