Presented in 2025 at the Francesca Pia Gallery as part of the exhibition Le monde à l’envers, 2025 is part of a series of paintings in which Sarah Benslimane adapts Robert Rauschenberg’s “flatbed” principle by freely arranging materials and forms on a horizontal surface. The work is composed of rectangular fragments of acoustic foam: the background features vertically oriented striations, against which two crosses—one of which is inverted— stand out, formed by other fragments arranged in the opposite direction. Small bells of various sizes and colours are slipped between the raised sections of the foam, where they catch the light and bring the surface to life. Whilst this work is distinguished by an almost sacred monumentality that is unusual in Benslimane’s practice, the bells counterbalance this solemnity by introducing a playful, DIY dimension—a characteristic of the artist’s work—to the piece.
