In Cursed Objects, Meriem Bennani depicts a female character who re-enacts the controversial Moroccan cultural phenomenon known as rotini alyawmi, in which scenes from everyday domestic life are shared on social media with intentions that are more or less suggestive and erotic. As the narrative unfolds, several objects in the space—a coffee pot, a straw, a flip-flop, and even a kitchen knife—come to life before turning against her, under the influence of a 5G spell cast by an internet witch. The video also incorporates autobiographical elements from the artist’s childhood in Morocco, as well as references to media figures and TV shopping programmes that transform ordinary items into objects of fascination. Produced in 2022, this single-channel video is also integrated into two of the artist’s mechanical sculptures: TV Jangle and Umbrella Twist.
