réalité (travailler) combines a featureless wooden human silhouette with a box designed to contain it. These figures, which first appeared in Ethan Assouline’s work in 2024, evoke children’s games or the inhabitants of a miniature city. For the artist, childhood embodies a perspective that remains outside the dominant ideological narratives and is capable of revealing their flaws. Here, the theme of labour is introduced by a tape measure and by a photograph of a Brussels sign, “Passage du Travail / Arbeids” (Labour Street), located in the working-class Marolles district. Affixed to a yellow Plexiglas panel inside the box, this image seems to mark the silhouette’s entry into the world of work: now confined, it can only perceive the outside world through this coloured filter.
